It is that time of year again, everyone around you is making New Year’s resolutions. When it comes to fitness everyone usually goes right for weight loss, which is definitely not a bad thing but it’s not the only thing. Working towards a healthier you is always great but your first goal doesn’t always have to be weight loss. When it comes to fitness there are lots of other components to being healthier. Chances are if you work on some other fitness related goals weight loss will come right along with it. Here are some fitness related goals you can make for 2018.
1. Flexibility. Okay so let’s be honest, when was the last time you were able to reach your toes? Most people struggle with basic flexibility. Personally, I need to make this my #1 resolution, yes I can reach my toes but I have lots of tight areas that make lifting and running difficult. Additional flexibility can help with range of motion, lessen those aches and pains and help prevent injuries. Try adding in 10-15 minutes of stretching a day.
2. Running/Cardio. We know everyone hates cardio but getting your heart into better shape helps your body function better. One goal you could make is running a mile in a certain amount of time or running without taking a break. It doesn’t just have to be running it could be being able to do the stair mill for 15 minutes without having to have CPR halfway through. If you have some struggles with knees, try out biking a certain distance in a certain amount of time. You can set a goal time/distance and work all year towards it.
3. Strength. This is my personal favorite one because there is a lot of great things that come from getting stronger. Every day tasks get easier, you will notice things around the house aren’t as heavy. Plus watching your body get stronger and being able to do things you couldn’t do a few weeks or months ago is encouragement and so great for self-confidence. This is why I am a weights addict. I love how good being strong makes me feel about myself. Strengthening your body strengthens your soul and will power. Plus, lifting weights regularly will help with losing body fat and strengthen your metabolism so it’s a win win win.
4. Mental gains. This one sounds weird, I know. BUTTTTTTTT conquering your mind is the hardest thing to do when it comes to getting fit or moving forward. If you can get control of your mind and have more positive thoughts you will be able to do much more things around the gym and in life. Most of the time your mind gives out on you before your body does. You will be able to fight off craving and push yourself harder in the gym if you can conquer your mind. Positive thoughts are good for the soul.
SO instead of going right for weight loss this year try one or two or all of these out. Chances are weight loss will come along with it, plus feeling pretty darn good about the accomplishments and progress you are making. Good luck on your New Year’s goals! – Leslie
